The Wright Chiropractic Health Center has had great success with the treatment of injuries associated with vehicular trauma. We embrace the challenge of caring for these often misunderstood ailments. When an individual is involved in a motor vehicle accident it often results in ligamentous laxity, or a loosening of the ligaments which were sprained (stretched/torn) from the force of impact. Commonly, the retaining ligaments which attach the vertebrae of the spinal column together are involved. The resultant instability allows more motion and subsequent misalignment/fixation than was present prior to their trauma. These patients will have recurrent episodes of pain and stiffness for years following their accident.
It is important to have a thorough orthopedic and neurological exam to determine the extent of a patient’s injuries and to determine the best course of treatment. Once a diagnosis has been established, treatment can begin. We, as chiropractors, correct spinal misalignment and fixation through manipulation of corresponding vertebrae. We apply physical therapy modalities to relieve pain, muscle spasm and inflammation as correction is maintained. It is important to educate each patient concerning proper diet and water intake, work and sleep postures and strengthening of injured areas. Muscle tonicity and strength can serve to protect, stabilize and subsequently reduce the recurrent episodes of pain and stiffness associated with injuries of this type.
When accident victims are treated with chiropractic care in our office we are careful to begin manipulation of misaligned/fixated segments only after the patient’s severe acute symptoms have been resolved. We utilize a full physical therapy department including Ultrasound, Interferential Current, High and Low Galvanic Stimulation, Intersegmental Traction, Cryotherapy, Hydrocollator Packs and Paraffin Bath to enable a quick recovery followed by lasting correction.
